Rave Generation: Screech Machine

Three-oscillator screech and lead synth

Rave Generation: Screech Machine
😱 Three-oscillator screech and lead synth. The oscillators feed a chain: resonant filter, drive, second filter, 256-curve waveshaper, OTT and EQ. Five pitch contours, Hoover among them, stack on a free pitch envelope.

Includes 32 presets.

Features

  • Filter, Drive And Waveshaper ChainFilter A, Drive, Filter B, Morph, OTT and EQ run in series after the oscillators. Push Filter A's Reso and it screams into the drive; its Vel knob lets velocity open or close it. Filter B shapes what the drive made before the waveshaper distorts it again.
  • Pitch Envelope With Five ContoursTune moves the note up to 48 semitones either way, with Attack, Hold, Decay, Sustain and a Curve from snappy to swelling. Pitch Mode adds a fixed contour on top: Drop, Dive, Rise, Bounce or Hoover. Both run at once, so a fast drop can sit on a slow envelope rise.
  • Ten Waves On Three OscillatorsSaw, Super, Square, Pulse, Triangle, Sine, Noise, PWM, Saw PWM and R-Mod, each oscillator with its own Semi, Fine and Level. Super is a 7-voice supersaw modeled on the JP-8000's. Saw PWM is a saw plus a PWM pulse an octave up, modeled on the Alpha Juno's hoover saw. PWM Rate and Depth set the width sweep of both PWM waves.
  • Hard Sync And Ring ModulationClick the OSC 2 bar to sync OSC 2 to OSC 1, then sweep OSC 2's pitch with the pitch envelope, an LFO or the mod wheel for the sync scream. Set any oscillator to R-Mod and it plays the other two multiplied.
  • Unison Up To 9 VoicesVoices stacks up to 9 copies of every oscillator, Detune spreads them, Width pans them across the stereo field, and Mix fades the detuned copies in against the centre one. On the Super wave the same three knobs shape its own 7 voices.
  • Four Drive CurvesSoft, Tube, Diode and Hard. Tube and Diode add even harmonics; Hard is a clipper. At 0 the drive is clean.
  • A Filter On Each Side Of The DriveFilter A morphs from low-pass through band-pass to high-pass on one knob. Filter B has eleven models: LP Clean, LP 3109 24, LP Ladder 24, HP, BP, Peak, Notch, LP FM, Acid 24, Ju-6 and Ju-106.
  • 256-Curve WaveshaperThe Morph section is Alien Drive's waveshaper. X picks the curve family, clean at 1 and destroyed at 16, Y sets its hardness, and past noon Fold folds the signal back on itself.
  • OTT And Output EQ3-band upward and downward compression with Depth and Time, then a low cut, a peak band and a high cut.
  • Phaser And A Last SaturationA phaser with Rate, Depth and Reso; click the PHASER bar to switch it. After it, Saturation drives the chain's last distortion, so a swept EQ peak or the phaser's sweep gets distorted too.
  • Stereo ChorusModeled on the JP-8000's chorus. Click the CHORUS bar to switch it on, and PRE / POST at its left end to choose where it sits: POST at the end of the chain, PRE before the drive, so the drive and EQ work on the chorused sound.
  • Stereo ReverbPre-Delay, Decay and Mix. It comes after the LFO's Level and Pan, so a tremolo or a pan rings out in the tail.
  • Mod Envelope With Eight Depth PillsOne envelope for the whole chain, with a depth pill under Filter A Freq, Reso and Morph, Drive, Filter B Freq, Morph X, Morph Y and Peak Freq. Drag a pill to set how far the envelope moves that knob; a ring around the knob shows the span.
  • Two LFOs And The Mod WheelSeven shapes and eleven destinations: Pitch, A Freq, A Morph, Drive, B Freq, Morph X, Morph Y, Peak Freq, Level, Pan and Osc 2 Pitch. Free runs in hertz, Sync locks to the host tempo, Trig restarts the cycle on each note, and Fade ramps the depth in for delayed vibrato. The mod wheel gets its own destination and depth from the same list.
  • Poly, Mono, Legato And Glide16 voices in Poly. Mono retriggers and glides on every note; Legato glides between overlapping notes without retriggering. Every glide takes the Glide time, whatever the interval.
  • OversamplingQuality runs the drive and the shapers at 1x, 2x or 4x: higher is cleaner on heavy drive and folding.
  • Never Over 0 dBFSHowever hard you push the drive, the folding or Level, the output never goes over 0 dBFS.
  • Hint BarHovering over any control shows a one-line description at the bottom of the panel. The i icon turns it on and off.
