Rave Generation: Alien Drive
Wavetable waveshaper & distortion
Wavetable waveshaper and distortion. Your signal reads its way through a bank of 256 transfer curves, and pushed far enough it folds back on itself instead of flattening. An envelope follower walks the bank with your transients, a germanium overdrive drives only the band you choose, and a tempo-locked LFO reaches seven destinations.
Features
- 256 Transfer CurvesA 16 x 16 wavetable bank. Curve X picks the family, ordered from smoothest at 1 to most destructive at 16: sine and triangle folds, odd and even harmonic curves, a wrapping saw, pulse, soft to hard clip, half-wave rectifier, crossover notch, double, triple and quad folds, sync, ripple, stepped and dense. Curve Y sets its hardness. Both axes interpolate, and the CURVE pill frees the two knobs from their detents so you can stop between two curves.
- Wavefolding Rather Than ClippingFold Gain sets how much of the curve a full-scale signal sweeps, from a tenth of a period to sixteen periods, with exactly one at noon. Below noon it shapes; past noon the signal runs through the curve more than once and folds back, adding harmonics where a clipper would only flatten the peak. Rotate moves where the reading starts, so the folds land on a different part of the wave, and Fold Mix sets how much of the shaper is in circuit.
- Envelope-Driven Curve MovementMod X and Mod Y let an envelope follower push Curve X and Curve Y up to 7 positions either way, so loud hits move further through the bank and quiet passages stay put. Env Release sets how quickly it falls back between hits. The follower reads the signal ahead of the compressor, so Comp does not flatten the movement.
- Germanium Drive On A Chosen BandA germanium diode stage with up to 60 dB of drive sits in front of the shaper. Tone picks the band that goes into the diodes, about two and a half octaves wide and anywhere from 10 Hz to 10 kHz, and everything outside it passes untouched. Set low, it drives the body of a kick and leaves the click clean. The two diode halves are deliberately mismatched, so the clipping is soft and asymmetric and adds even harmonics rather than a hard edge.
- Resonant Pivot EQBass and Treble shelves pivot around one corner between 200 Hz and 3.2 kHz, and Peak sits on the same point, so EQ Freq moves all three at once. Peak raises its gain and narrows its bandwidth together, running from a broad lift to a focused ring. Bass reaches a full cut at the bottom of its travel.
- Tempo-Locked LFOSync takes its phase from the song position, so the same bar always gets the same movement. Restart is tempo-locked too but begins at phase 0 every time you press play, so what you audition is what you record. Trig restarts the cycle on each transient, and Free runs in hertz, 0.05-20 Hz. Ten note divisions from 2 bars to 1/32 including triplets, and five shapes: sine, triangle, saw, square and sample and hold.
- Seven LFO DestinationsFold Gain, Fold Mix, Clip, Tone, EQ Freq, Peak and Dry/Wet each have their own depth pill, bipolar from -100% to +100% of that knob's travel, and a ring around the knob shows the span the LFO covers. Opposite signs on two destinations make one rise as the other falls.
- Live Transfer CurveThe display draws the shaper's actual curve at the current settings, input across and output up. The bright band is the span a full-scale input sweeps at the current Fold Gain; anything outside it is curve you are not reaching. It follows Curve X, Curve Y, Rotate and the envelope, so it moves as you play.
- Hard Ceiling After The MixClip drives the signal into a hard 0 dBFS ceiling with up to 24 dB of gain. It sits after the dry/wet mix, so the ceiling holds whatever the wet path, the dry path or a blend of the two is doing. At 0 dB it only catches overs; wound up it is a distortion stage of its own.
- Up To 8x OversamplingQuality runs the overdrive, the waveshaper and the output clipper at 2x, 4x or 8x. 4x, the default, is the least that keeps hard folding clean. Off gives zero latency and keeps aliased folding available as a sound of its own. Latency is reported to the host, and the dry path is delay-matched at every setting, so Dry/Wet mixes instead of combing.
- Same Sound At Any Buffer SizeModulation is resolved on a fixed sample grid rather than once per host buffer, so a different buffer size, or a host splitting its buffers at an automation point, never changes the sound. Renders at 64, 128 and 512-sample buffers null against a 256-sample render to below -238 dBFS with the LFO on every destination.
- Hint BarHovering over any control shows a one-line description at the bottom of the panel. The i icon toggles it, and the setting persists without being written into presets.
